How's the top and sides? Front doesn't look that bad. After removing everything that is not wood, I would remove all the accumulated crud with mineral spirits with paper towels, and then have another look. This would be the conservative method, you could always touch up or build and then color up imperfections with some filler and artists oils, wait a long time and then then apply a lacquer finish. As always "It depends."
