Hi

I would begin by spraying the band switch, preferably with DeOxit but a good contact cleaner might also work.

If I am understanding you correctly, the radio is picking up AM station with the pushbuttons, but not on dial tuning? That might rule out the local oscillator, and again point to the band switch - depending on its circuitry; don't rule out the oscillator entirely before thorough tests, voltage checks, etc. Now if you aren't getting any AM stations with the pushbuttons, then the oscillator circuit becomes a definite culprit.
