For the early version, the sides are very dark brown, with the wood grain barely visible. As I remember I used Mohawk Perfect Brown on mine, which is a pigmented toner.

I had to fix the inlay too, and especially to remove the bondo (painted black) added by the previous owner. I think I used ebony veneer from one of those Constantine sample kits. I remember it was a job finding matching grain.
