37-11X Flexible Coupler
#1

Had to rebuild the flexible coupler on my 37-11X. There was a forum member here who posted instructions on doing this that proved invaluable, so I offer my thanks and a hat-tip to that gentleman for the assistance. Meanwhile, back in 1937…I used 3/32" sheet rubber, which was sourced from McMaster-Carr. I used rubber 1/32" thinner than the original so I could reuse the brass rivets that hold the shaft couplers onto the rubber. A hobby-store circle cutter was used to cut the rubber donuts from the sheet. The 1/32" difference in material thickness allowed just enough "meat" from the old rivets to poke over the top. I peened them over with a small ball-peen hammer. Unfortunately, I was unable to save the steel rivets that hold the entire assembly together, so they were replaced with 10-32 machine screws and washers. Still looks pretty good though, I think. It's quite supple and flexible, yet strong.

Before: Nice and crunchy rubber.

…and finally, installed in the radio…..
