I bought a 38-116 today.
It is almost complete. I have already ordered a dial scale and grille cloth.
Some previous owner had made a wierd modification - they installed an RCA socket in the middle of the patent label, and a terminal strip beside the speaker, with what looked like phone wire connected directly to the voice coil. While the field coil and the voice coil test good (yahoo!), I get a zero ohms reading on the secondary side of the output transformer, so probably need one of those. Does anyone have one (part number 32-7751), know where to get one, or have the specifications for it? I can try to make a good guess using tube data on the push-pull 6L6 outputs and the voice coil impeadence (DC resistance x 1.75 or so).
My radio is missing one of the three 6.25" acoustic clarifiers. Does anyone have any ideas where to buy one?
In a thread from 2006, Chuck states that the back is essential, and another person posted that it sounded far better with the back in place. I found an article which states that the front vertical rods are also part oft eh acoustic tuning, but that the back is not necessary. It also states that cabinet resonance is greatest when the radio is back to a wall. I suspect that the room in which it is placed is also very significant. It contains a good picture of the back: Mine is missing the back, so I'll have to make one.
