I have been wanting a 38-690XX for several years now...and, this past weekend, I finally acquired one!

We took a whirlwind trip to Moline, Illinois on Friday. Saturday morning, we visited my friend y2k Bruce, from whom I purchased this fine radio.
He had it playing when we arrived. He later let us hear a few of his E.H. Scott and McMurdo Silver sets, and I think the 38-690 could give either a run for the money even though the Scott and Silver sets had amplifiers with higher power outputs and I could tell they were more powerful overall.
We brought the 690 home Saturday evening, and the next day, I brought it inside with the help of a visitor who, along with his wife, spent the afternoon with us.
It is now reunited with its older brother 37-690, which I had purchased from Bruce a year or so ago.

(Quick photo - apologies for its blurriness.)
I'm a happy camper. Many thanks to Bruce for the tour of his fine collection and for the good deal on the 690!

That is absolutely beautiful. How many watts does the amp put out?

20 watts in the 38-690. The 37-690 was advertised with 15 watts.

Congrats indeed--the 38-690 is a breathtaking unit in its appearance! (I'm such a newbie that I am still waiting to hear my first Philco. And happily, it looks like it's going to be my own )

After finding out from someone that he picked up a 15 tube model 1507 Sparton about 40 miles from me, and finding two larger Rogers built sets, a 9 tube DeForest Crosley Brahms from 1938, a 10 tube Canadian Majestic from 1939, and a RCA 911K, I know there was money around here in the 30's. I can't help but think that there must be a 680 or 690 Philco hiding in a basement or garage somewhere given the amount of Philco stuff I find.
Regards
