My new Zenith Trans-Oceanic
#1

Hey everyone,
Here are some pics of my newest find, A Zenith Trans-Oceanic 8G005yt from 1947-48. I normally don't have an interest in post war sets, but I just fixed a 1953 H-500 TO for a friend and kind of got an urge to get one for myself. I wanted an earlier version thoughIcon_rolleyes! I decided on this version as it is an 8 tube model with all loktal tubes and a push pull amplifier, which I think is pretty neat seeing as it's a "portable" setIcon_lol! i wasn't too crazy about the Ebay prices until I came across this one with a "But it now" price of $19.95! It wasn't listed there for longIcon_lol!!! After a few anxious days it arrived here undamaged today. I very happy with it, as it is in very good original condition with all of it's accesories.

All in all with shipping it was about 50 bucks, so I think I did pretty good on this one. guess i know what I'll be doing this winter!

They are good sets.
This one (I think there are two of them looking almost the same) is as old as it gets short of 7G605 which is scarce now. I have one and I am planning to start on itg beginning next year once I fix some low hanging fruits I recently acquired.

Morzh,
you are right. there is a later version with the same chassis except for the rectifier tube, which is a miniature tube. I think in 1949 they introduced the G-500 which has a similiar cabinet but a new chassis. I wanted this earlier version. i would love to get the original "bomber" version but they are expensiveIcon_crazy!

Looks nice and complete. Chassis appears very clean. The earlier ones are very cool. I have a G500 that I found at the flea market for $20 a couple years back. I had it electronically restored and now it works great. I need to redo the black material on the bottom since there was some moisture damage. I also want to put a couple of new hinges on the bottom. They are fun to listen to. Whenever I buy a radio via eBay, I always stress to the seller "please package very, very carefully to help avoid any potential postal damage". Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Nice find! Enjoy!

Kevin,

One problem these tend to have (I've had several, and it's been about 60-40) is that the output transformer ends up being open. Cross your fingers.

Mine is in good cosmetic condition but missing the from cover; I am looking for one. But even junk 7G605 that I eyed at some point go for close to $150-200, so for the cover it is too much.

Those output transformers tend to be hard to replace as they have a high primary impedance like 10-20K. Same as some of the Philco farm sets.

I in fact have one of those. Someone put that together with the speaker in my 38-15. I was wondering why the primary was 20K when expected to be about 300 Ohm. And!!! It sang!. I still replaced it.
