RadioSvit: I believe battery powered sets were quite common in many places in England/UK. In the 1930's many houses were not supplied with electricity, and even if they were, differences in the supply around the country made it tricky for electronic equipment. So, battery powered radios were quite common, even until later. My father recalls this was the case at his home (in a large town) even in the late 1940's or early 1950's, and that my Grandfather would take the lead-acid cells used for filament/heater supply up to the local garage to get them charged. That Kolster-Brandes is a beauty, by the way.

I don't hold with furniture that talks.
