Philco 46-1201 Restoration
#31

I used the same clamp that old electronics were in. metal clamp through chassis..

Should I take the Electrolytic caps from the clamps.. and allow them to be isolated from the chassis?

Would that cause my problem? I think I will try it anyway to see if it makes difference..

Ok just tried this Isolated the Caps from Chassis.. Still same problem.. Have NO clue.. I guess I will have to stop and regroup later. Start on something else.. Since I cannot figure this out...

All, I just noticed this.. THere is a resistor a 1 Meg looks like 1/4 watt from Pin 6 of 7A8 to top of C402 Thats not on schematic. When disconnected the motorboating changes to Load clicking sound mor frequent at top of band and closer togehter.. Should this be there???

Measure the resistance of that 1M resistor in circuit. In the big scheme of things I don't think it's doing much as it's being shunted by what should be a very lo resistance of the ant and loop coils. If the resistance across is more that a few ohms  you've got a bad coil or loop.

Ok, Found something else.. Looking at the schematic Pin 4 of T400 should go to the C402 .1 mf cap. Pin 4 of mine goes to Ground.. Is this right???Looks like a factory solder.. But it gets grounded at the Variable Cap..

See pictures.. Looks like a wire never ran to to C402...

Why would that terminal be grounded.. Is it wrong or schematic??

Having a hard time following along as your small piece of a schematic doesn't disclose the whole picture. Try this diagram:
http://www.rsp-italy.it/Electronics/Radi...n/1947.pdf
See pg 115. It seems to be closer to what you have.

Terry, Ok thanks.. pin 4 of the antenna coil goes to ground on my set. Not to the .1 mfd cap..

According to schematic it should go to the .1 mfd cap, z300 and pin 6 of tube 7C6..

I will double check to make sure I am seeing this right..

Here is what mine looks like..

The Philco schematic seems to match what Terry sent..

If anyone has done this model could you check to see where your Pin 4 of antenna coil goes??

Am I chasing the wrong things??

The way your set is wired it has the avc line grounded thus rendering it inoperable. As per the diagram pin 4 should be connected to the avc line (pin 6 of the 7C6).
I know that I said that you didn't need the coil around C-403, I've been told that it's a trap block out low frequency signals from getting into the IF. But just for grins wrap about ten turns of small ga magnet wire on the replacement cap and wire it as per the diagram.

I will see if I can find the paperwork I gathered for the 46-1201, and see if it has any notes for the Code 26 version, if I do find it I will scan it. A fellow on the alternative forum named Tom Albrecht sent this stuff to me since he restored a 46-1201 shortly before I began working on mine. I'm a bit foggy on this right now but I seem to remember that most of the changes were related to the power supply, the audio amp, and the tube lineup of same, not in the mixer-oscillator circuit which all seem to use the 7A8.
One problem I never resolved in my set is that I could not peak the IF alignment without the set motorboating, and when I adjusted it so it would not motorboat the dial would not track. I played around with that bypass cap-choke combo and it didn't really help much, if anything it worked better with the choke shorted out (my set had the RF choke wound on a proper form rather then just wrapping hookup wire around the capacitor body. In any event I got sick of playing around with it, and since the mercury switch for the phonograph did not work, and the cartridge was dead, I put the set back into drydock and moved on with other projects. I have a theory that my set may have been a dog when it left the factory, because the last time I had a set behave this way it was when I accidentally crossed the secondary and primary leads of an IF transformer together in a 42-327 whilst replacing them, I may investigate whether this was the case in my Bing Crosby.

I can not see how my set was ever working.. With the wiring errors and one of the replaced IF cans per code that was wired wrong..

I found some information regarding the 46-1201 Code 126 version in a copy of a Philco Service folder. It states that the Code 126 is the same as the Code 125, so I will start with what it has to say about the Code 125:

Code 125

1. This code is the same as Code 121 (shown in manual), except that it has a metal base cabinet, Part No. 10664A for the oval speaker or 10664B for the round speaker. Round and oval speakers are used interchangeably in production.
2.  In the new metal base cabinet, bullet catches in the upper section engage the metal base. To open the cabinet: Open the record door and used the thumbs to depress the bullet catches, located at the outside edges of the opening. while lifting upward on the cabinet. Fold the cabinet back. Hinged fasteners permit separating the top and the base of the cabinet.
3.  Code 125 bears the same run numbers as Code 121, because both codes use the same chassis. Code 125 started with Run 4.

Code 126

RUN 1
This code is the same as Code 125 except for the following:
a.  The 50Y6GT rectifier tube was changed to a 50X6.
b.  The octal socket for the rectifier tube was changed to a Loctal socket, Part No. 27-6138*.
RUN 2
a.   C201, .01 mf.,  400v, Part No. 30-4572, was changed to 600v, Part No. 61-0120*.
b.   C203, .01 mf.,  400v, Part No. 30-4572, was changed to 600v, Part No. 61-0120*.
RUN 3
The  i-f transformers were replaced with permeability-tuned transformers, to correct frequency drift which was caused by leakage of wax on the trimmers. This change involves the following:
a.   The first i-f transformer, Part No. 32-3968, was changed to Part No. 32-4160-1.
b.   The second i-f transformer, Part No. 32-3674*, was changed to Part No. 32-4161-1.
c.   The necessary wiring changes were made.
d.   In replacing the transformers, R301 (47,000 ohms), C301C, and C301D, all of which were inside Z301, were eliminated; to provide the necessary i-f filter, a 47,000-ohm resistor and two 100-mmf. condensers were installed, outside the i-f can.

I would guess that since your set has a pair of permeability tuned i-f cans then it must be a Code 126 RUN 3 version.

Arran, Ok thanks You are good.. I do have a code 126 Run 3.. I have all that info from Chuck.. But I must have missed it.. Thanks for taking the time to look it up.. I copied and pasted it and printed it out..

I think I will put this away for awhile . I did put it in the FS section as a parts chassis.. So if it doesn't sell I will get to it later..

Thanks Again..

Have you downloaded and taken a look at the 46-1201 factory changes?

Look for the file 46-1201.zip
