42-395X project
#1

Hello all, newbie here with a unique project. I found this cab and speaker on Craigslist for free!! I picked it up Sunday, and of course, found a bit more damage than seen in a previously provided pic. Hopefully nothing major, and I can fix it with some epoxy or glue. You can see where the veneer is pulling up on the left side of the first pic. All in all though, this thing is in sturdy shape. I don't mind a few dings or scratches, it adds to the history of this piece. After all, it is 70 years old!

I will replace the speaker cloth with some replacement cloth.

I am planning on turning this into an MP3 Jukebox complete with touch screen where the old controls were.

I really hope I am not offending anyone here, as I realize this may be sacrilege to do so, but I have always been a fan of older radios, and a hobby of mine is making old stuff new. So please, if this offends you, let me know, and I will remove this post. I have much respect for restorers and people way above my skill level, and I don't mean to rile up any trouble being a newbie.

I just figured this would be the best place to learn about these wonderful machines, and a place to try and at least restore this beauty to what it at least cosmetically once was.

Thank you

Hello and welcome.

I had to edit your post to get the pictures to show; the software here does not like anything other than the three letters img between the brackets. Of course this makes the right edge of the photos not show if not viewed at high resolution. This is a flaw in the Phorum software I need to fix one of these days. Sorry about that.

Radio collectors generally frown upon using old radios as computer cabinets, guitar amp cabinets, etc. However, it is your radio and you are free to do with it as you wish.

Since it did not have a chassis in it, this makes it a better candidate for the purposes you described and therefore, I don't think very many people will be upset about it. Icon_smile

May I suggest you offer the speaker and loop antenna for sale here on the Phorum if you will not be using them? Someone here can probably use those parts.

I strongly suggest you use the brown Titebond wood glue rather than epoxy on the cabinet; properly clamped, it will do a much better job.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks Ron. I dabble in a bunch of different hobbies, and I know how purists are. I just don't want to ruffle any feathers being the new guy.

To be quite honest, I would love to restore an old tombstone or console radio one day, but I am sorry to say my skills are pretty limited. I am a fast learn, but I wouldn't want to further damage something.

I would never have gutted a complete cabinet, I wouldn't be able to do that. Seeing as the guy was basically junking this, I figured I'd save it from the trash heap and at least put it to some use.

As far as selling the parts, I am all for that, whatever money I can get towards supplies for the project always help. However, I am not sure the speaker even works, and don't have a way to test it (that I know of) What would be the value on these parts?

Yes, good save, and I understand.

You won't get rich from the sale of the speaker and loop, but a few bucks for the loop and maybe $10-20 for the speaker would make someone here happy, and you could then buy a couple cans of lacquer or something for your cabinet... Icon_smile

Your link goes to a non-existent page on eBay...

OOPS! Edited Icon_redface

You did notice that your eBay win is just for the chassis & speaker, not the cabinet...right?

I'm curious now...and I am not trying to be mean or sarcastic in any way...but I have to ask, what are you going to do with a 42-390 chassis & speaker when your stated intent was to make a computer out of your 42-395 cabinet?

Also, the 42-390 has nine pushbuttons...the 42-395 has ten pushbuttons, a longer escutcheon, and a longer dial scale.

As I said...just curious.

I am making it a "stealth" juke box.

I wanted to get the "shell" to look authentic, although now after reading what you posted, I guess it won't be. If anything, I will use the bezel from the radio face to "trim" out the hole where I had originally planned to put the LCD screen.

I realize it wasn't the cabinet, yes. Will this radio face fit the hole??

Something like this:

That is about nice as it gets. I have a old crosley perfect cabinet . Already has the pull down door where the phono is .
Be perfect for this. It works but i already have four working philcos. 8)

No, not quite. As I said in my previous post, your cabinet has a longer hole for the dial and pushbuttons because the 42-395 had a longer dial scale and 10 pushbuttons instead of 9. You can try it, but it may not work.

Since the 42-395 does not have a bin for a record changer, it looks like you will have to install a small touch screen where the radio's dial face once was.

If the escutcheon will cover the hole in your 42-395 cabinet, I hope you will offer the leftover parts in our Philco For Sale Or Trade section, and not just throw them out. Someone here could use whatever is left over... Icon_smile

Ron, I already have plans to post here what I don't need.

I am not some kid that's just going to chuck out what I don't need, and I appreciate the value that these parts may hold.

If it doesn't work, I will offer up the whole package I bought for the same price I paid, plus applicable shipping. The guy who shipped it said it actually cost him $34 just to ship, so whatever shipping is plus the $19.99 I paid.
