Unknown AA5 set... any guesses?
![]() Got handed this one from my father-in-law. What I have on it, thus far-- 9 inches wide, 6 inches tall (excluding handle) and 5 inches deep. Tubes in the chassis are 50L6GT, 35Z5GT, 12Q7GT, 12K7 GT, and 12A8G. This lineup matches several Emersons, Dewald Pierce-Airos and some Electrohome Dominions, but the chunk o' decal under the bakelite (?) grille doesn't match anything like those labels. A plate on the back of the chassis reads "Licensed under patents of RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MFG CO. and associated companies and under Hazeltine & Latour patents by HAZELTINE CORPORATION to the extent shown by notice within." and serial no. CX-422866. I'd question the cabinet's originality, but the plastic dial cover doesn't have any extra sets of holes where it had been stapled, nor does the cardboard between the speaker and cabinet, plus the cabinet has mounting holes for (presumably) the back cover. The dial face has "717-3" on it, out of view unless the chassis is pulled. I know it's a long shot, but... any guesses? |

Yep. Very similar to this one.

CX serial number might be Climax, one of the many independent Chicago brands that isn't well documented.

RE: Unknown AA5 set... any guesses?
Very similar to the General (X)A5 series; only difference is the dial face. A brief look at the schematic looks like the right critter, too. Another contender is the 591. I just haven't found any with the same dial face.
I checked out Climax a little bit--boy, you're right, there isn't much out there. Radiomuseum.org didn't have any 5-tube schematics that the tube lineup matched. They had some pictures of cool cabinets, though |
