PHILCO 98 EXPORT Model

Hi folks.

I have a Philco 98 UK EXPORT model. It has four wavebands an is probably a series 2. although is is not stamped as such. Aparently there were at least four (runs) of this model.

Do any of you fine people have data sheets for this EXPORT model. It is not the same chasis as that shown in the Rider sheet.

I thought I had a model 98 service bulletin, Hotwire, but I don't. Sorry. And I see you have already looked at the Rider's info and it doesn't match your set.

As a matter of policy, we generally prefer not to send anyone away to another site when they come here looking for answers. But in cases like this, the best way to help you out would be to direct you to the UK Vintage Radio and Restoration Forum.

There is little to no information available on UK/European Philcos over here in the USA, even though many of them were built in Philadelphia and then exported to the UK. So there may be someone on the UK forum who has the service info you seek.

All right, folks, hold the phone. After further study of the photos, I think I found something.

First, let's review the photos:

The tube layout does not match the 97.

The parts layout does not match the 97.

In fact, the parts layout and tube layout are nearly identical to the USA Model 640!

Other than those two extra electrolytics on the left of the under-chassis photo, mounted to the side of the chassis, it looks identical to a 640 underneath, to me.

Notice also the square tube shields, and the "studs" at the front of the chassis. Plus, the cabinet uses an oval dial which Philco did not introduce until the 1936 season.

So this is a 1936 model set.

I am wondering now, if Philco continued to offer the 98 but built it based on the USA 640 after May 1935?

Hotwire, can you please furnish a larger front view of the chassis so I can see the dial scale better?

I believe that all of the under chassis mounted filter caps are aftermarket replacements, the originals would have been mounted where those two empty clamps are on the front right hand corner of the chassis. Those two stud mounted ones are some sort of foreign style dry electrolytic, it's possible that they may be original for the British market, depending on how many this set had to begin with. More then likely the stud mounted caps were just put in by some long departed repairman since they took advantage of the factory ventilation holes to install them.

HI again Folks.

Thank you Ron. I think you are on the money there re the 640 and the made in philly possibility as my 98 has an EXPORT ink stamp under the chasis I have a set of philco 98 service sheets and they look identical to the Riders 640 sheets. Thing is though that the Sheets I have are for Philco 98 series2 run no.4. Saying that Series 2 should be stamped on the back of the chasis which it is not. Also I notice that the 80 rectifier valve is in the location where the E condenser 2mf 2mf 1mf can should be and the can is where the valve should be.

Now here is my problem.

I am unsure if I have the correct service sheets because of the series2 run number 4 thing. Presumably there was a series1 and runs number (How many?)

Arran you are right on re the condensers on the left of the chasis picture. I have concluded that these two caps were a later fix to replace the condenser pot 2mf 2mf 1mf. and the two above them were maybe intended to replace the two E caps which were removed from the clamps as seen on top of the chasis. These are 8mf and 12mf There is also a replacement cap as seen in the photo which presumably was intended to replace the 1mf but it is an 8mf.

Can anyone possibly post a reasonably clear photo of the underside of a 640. If anyone has one of course.

one. I am not very experienced at restoring these old radios so your help is welcome. I have been around the houses here and in england re the service sheets. Thats where I obtained the one I have but I think that you guys may be able to take me further with it as I have been stuck for the last few months unsure as to exactly what model run I have.

Well, I think this settles the issue...that's a 640 dial!

Compare Hotwire's 98 dial to a USA Philco 640/650 dial:

The two dial scales sure look identical to me!

So it is apparent Philco stuck 220 volt transformers in 640 chassis and sent them to the UK as "Model 98" sets for the 1936 season.

That is, Hotwire, assuming your 98 is designed for 220 volt operation?

I do not own a 640, so I'm afraid I can't help you with the under-chassis photo. Hopefully someone here will chime in. I can send you the service info for the 640 if you want it.

Hi Ron.
Yes Its set up 220v allright and the dial part number is the same 27-51D3.
I have a notion somewhere in my head that the model I have is a 1937 issue from the uk.
Have you any thaughts on this business of series2 run no.4?. If you can PM me those 640 sheets I will compare them with the sheets I have. Thank you Ron.

Hi Folks
Its been a while since I posted here.
Still picking at this radio with not much progress.
I have not yet identified which run number it is and so I dont Know what changes were involved from the original 640.
I am looking for a wave trap for it as shown in the bottom of the photo above.
The one that was on it is Kaput.
If anyone has one and would sell and post it I would be delighted.
I live in Ireland.
