Philco 39-35.......opinions!
#1

Anyone here have first hand experience with this model as far as reception
And audio performance. I have been looking for a good performing floor model
and came across this one at an antique barn today. The cabinet is in gorgeous
condition but I would need to do chassis restoration. Since I only have room for
one console I want to be sure it is a good performer. Really would like to find a
37 or 38-116 but I'm not that lucky...so enlighten me guys.
Thanks

It's one of the console versions of a Philco 39-30, it has six tubes so it's a pretty average set. If you have a limited amount of space I think I would probably pass on it unless you really like the thing. If there is a console and a table set the share the same chassis I tend towards the table versions.

Arran is right in that the 39-35 isn't much of a console set. I have a similar table model, a Canadian 39-330AT, and it is a surprisingly sensitive set. Still, when I look at a console radio, I prefer one with lots of tubes, AM and two or more SW bands.

Thanks Arran and Ron. That is what I was thinking. No RF amp and only one stage
of IF so I thought it would only be average plus a single ended audio output. What a pity though because the cabinet is beautiful. Oh we'll, I'll keep hoping for that 37 or
38-116 someday.

I'm probably too late with my reply, but I really enjoy my 39-35. Quite easy to work on. Yes, it is not the most impressive of the 1939 Philco sets, it is a very good performer. As Ron stated, it is a very sensitive set. It will sometimes receive anything that my other radios have trouble with, using only a long wire, especially SW. My only complaint with this chassis only has the three position tone control, instead of a variable control. Too bad it's not the 39-31 cabinet that is the same as the 40-180. Those wine red push buttons do look nice at night when lit.
