Philco 40-180: the radio plays!
#1

Got the old beater fired up and playing pretty good now. It still needs to be aligned and tweaked a bit.

I had a number of problems with this set: replaced all electrolytic and paper caps, rebuilt the bakelite cap. The RF tube 1232 was supposed to have its grid connected to ground, but it wasn't. I had to take apart the volume and tone controls and clean them. I also rewound the oscillator coil, before it wasn't working at all. There were a few caps just laying in the chassis not connected to anything, so I had to figure out where to connect them. I also had to get a new 6J8G and an 84. Put in a lot of new wiring to replace the rubber coated wires that deteriorated.

The tone controls were eventually removed. The radio sounded better that way.

Congratulations. Always good to hear that another Philco has been brought back to life.
