1) Mine does not have a cardboard piece on the backside of the escutcheon, so I 'm afraid I can't help you there. Perhaps you can post some pictures of it.
2) I believe this is right. Mine also did not have the copper spring on the On/Off button, which is the one on the left. It's not how bad you mess up, it's how well you can recover.
