My new 42-1012
#1

Just brought home this 42-1012. I got it off of Craigslist, took a gamble as the seller could not provide photos and was about 65 miles from my home. A friend went along with me, but there was a hitch, he had to be home by 4:30 so he could do communion at his church or his wife would kill him ( and me as well) and we couldn't meet the guy until 3:00! This place was a little village in the middle of nowhere and when we drove up this place was a mess!!!! The guy said he had to dig it out to get it and wouldn't let us help?!! I wasn't feeling very good at this point, but he got it out in about 10 minutes and this is what I got. Even though the lid is missing (which he told me about beforehand), it's in pretty decent shape. So we loaded it up and I high tailed it for home and got my friend back with 2 minutes to spareIcon_clap!!!! I just got it out of my car and wanted to post some pics. Kevin

Look like a great find! There is a door on ebay, not sure if it would fit but here is the link.

Good job, Kevin! I knew that one had your name all over it Icon_lol $75 for a BOL is reasonable, IMO.

I think the "Beam of Light" Philcos are really special. Don't believe any negative evaluations. They're about the only 78 rpm phonograph worthy of preservation. If the radio works on AM standard broadcast, set "phono" and shine a flashlight thru an electric fan onto the photo cell in the phono pickup. If you hear the roar, there's no excuse for not getting the set working. ...door or no door.

Good Luck, It looks very good to me.

PS The old Armstrong FM-band is also a reminder of not-to-be-forgotten bit of radio history. And the SW performance is superior to radios trying to cover 6 to 18 MHz. Tuning stability is better, 2 IF's give better selectivity and sensitivity, the mixer/converter is better than the pentagrid single tube.

Congratulations, Kevin! Icon_clap Icon_thumbup

The door linked above on eBay will not fit your cabinet. You will need one from a 42-1012 or a 41-610. Empty cabinets of those models pop up from time to time. Maybe one of you guys going to Kutztown could look for one of these for Kevin, or even save one from a cabinet destined for the Friday night flame?
