What kind of wire to use to replace old wiring? Pleas help
#1

Hello again,

Just brought my first radio restoration to life today (with the help of TonyJSenior). A Philco 610 beauty.

Quick question: Many of these old radios have wiring that when you move it, it just crumbles. At least its insualtion does. With that being said, what kind of wiring should I use to replace the old wiring? Home improvement stores all carry coper wiring, but being new to this hobby, I am usure what kind I need. I am talking about the basic wiring that is under the chasis to connect caps., resistors, etc. Do any of you have a website you recommend ordering this on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I recently just picked up a few small spools of wire from Radio Daze (http://www.radiodaze.com). They have cloth covered wire that is rated for 600 volts in a variety of colors. For under the chassis work you may want to look at having a spool of solid in both 18 and 20 gauge sizes on hand. I've been told that the 20 gauge is usually fine for most of the work, while the 18 gauge is sometimes preferred for higher current use such as parallel connections of tube filamets.

Another source of cloth-covered wire is Sundial Wire.

Now for rubber-covered wiring, you can use heat shrink tubing, available in various colors, to replace the old rotten and crumbling rubber insulation. Once installed and shrunk, it bears a very close resemblance to the original rubber insulation.
