Schematic Philco Model 531
#1

Been a while since I visited the phorum. Now I need some help trying to find a schematic for a Philco model 531. Beitman has nothing, Rider has a pictorial that has no component or wiring info. Fell in love with this since it's the first year for Philco and the beautiful walnut cabinet. So, unless I can get a schematic I'll have to turn up the Variac very carefully. But before doing that perhaps I can get some help here.

  1. First I should mention that I have a Model 86 that the chassis is identical but the similarity ends there. The 531 apparently used a separately powered speaker (which is missing) as did all the table models in 1928. So a PM speaker would be an obvious solution.

  2. I'll surely need info on the filter caps. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Geezer,

The 531 is the high boy version of the 511 series. Check out this link for Radio Museum
https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/philco_531.html

The filter cap network of the 514 I restored was encased in wax, most are packed in black tar. Don't use electrolytic caps as replacements, use poly film caps of closest value. Be cautious with the brittle wires and take photos and draw diagrams. Be aware of a wiring change for the filter cap network.

You don't have to go to Radiomuseeeeeum. Icon_rolleyes

Comprehensive service info is available on this site. It is clearer and easier to download, too. Nathan has worked very hard to put this together.

For model 531, you want Model 511 Series:

Renovated Radios do carry what you need. As for the voltage, a wire should be at least 300V-rated.morzh — 11:13 PM
