I took apart pot. It just had an “e” clip over the cover. I brushed carbon ring with
soft brush , sprayed some F5 on it. I believe All this time I have had my ohm meter set in the wrong place. When I set it on “2m” I am getting a reading of 1208 end to end ( would that be a good reading?) and the wiper is now working progressively from low to high. I will reinstall and see if it works. Thanks for all the help !!

It works !
Thank you Morzh and all who helped this know nothing about radios person ! The inner workings of that pot with the brass rollers harkens back to when stuff was built to last.

Before I made the fix I did get a nice response from Mark Oppat of “Old Radio Parts”. He has the pot I needed, just have to cut the stem to proper length.
Attached is image of email he sent me. I let him know I was able to fix mine. This may help someone looking for this 500k audio pot.

Rod
Mua-ha-ha-ha JonnyM When cutting the shaft, make sure you measure not the shaft itself but to the common reference plane, that is to the chassis' bracket to which the point is mounted. Different pots can have different bushing length and different distance between the start of the shaft and the mounting bracket, so you need to make sure the distance is the same from the tip of the shaft to the mounting bracket's front. Otherwise it may come out longer or shorter (former is better, can be corrected, the latter cannot). People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
