40-216 Front Cabinet Light - *Added a pic of a tag
#1

Is it just the hole or was there some sort of red lamp cover?

I see that the lamp that goes there is the black tipped type so I could see where it may just be a hole and that is it.

I believe you are referring to the gem in the center under the dial?
It is an indicator light. I believe it is to let you know the power is on.

Right I get what it is for but is it just supposed to be a hole in the front of the cabinet or is it supposed to be covered by a lamp cover?

It originally had a lens which was made of Tenite plastic...which shrank and fell out over the decades.

Still looking over this unit I picked up last weekend. I noticed that on the radio face the far left tab indicates "Television Sound".

That position on the remote control is the 8th position which has a tab inserted labeled with a star.

What I don't get is that there is no "Television/Phono" label on the rear of chassis like my 40-180.

Did the 40-216 even do "Television Sound"?

If not I wonder why it was setup this way.

I can add pics if you need them

I merged your two 40-216 threads into a single thread called 40-216 Questions to keep the discussion together as requested in the rules section.

Adding this pic if there is info on what it's all about.

Just some sort of intellectual property warning?

I see in the 40-216 documents online that this unit was able to tune to TV sound.

That answers that Icon_smile

That tag is hilarious! It's look the DO NOT REMOVE UNDER PENALTY OF LAW tag on bedding!

I don't think these models could tune TV sound off the air, but the TV receiver would rebroadcast the sound on an AM frequency so it could be picked up by an existing radio set. Some of the Philco phonographs would also do this, so there wasn't a need for audio amplifier and speakers.

It seems to me that Philco made a big deal about this. They put a yellow label in the rear of the cabinet saying it was TV ready and even put a "Tele Vision" label in the low frequency push button position as a default. Some radios I've bought still have that label in place, but that push button was just for a low frequency AM station if you didn't use it with your TV.

Similar to the RP series of phonos.

Now I think I've got!
