Had the same problem with my Philco 90. Problem was the RF coil was corroded and arcing. Consider rewinding the coil. This is a known issue.

Thanks, Richard. I never thought of that. I'm used to those early 30's Philco coil primary windings being open altogether rather than just arcing.
