I have started recapping. There were a multitude of different brands of caps so for this set I simply chose to put in new caps without stuffing the old cap. The one exception was the electrolytic which mounted nicely as a tube for the two electrolytic values used in the set. The aluminum can slid out easily, no tar, after un folding one end of the cardboard tube. I then simply made some cardboard endcaps and mounted the two new electrolytics inside the cardboard tube. This allowed me to use the clip that held the original and it all will fit nicely in the chassis.

I did do some rust removal as well. The bottom of the chassis had a light layer of surface rust along the right side of the panel. Normally I've used naval jelly for this situation but decided to give Evaporust a try. My regular use of Evaporust is in a jar and dropping the rusty parts into it for several hours. In this case I just dabbed on the liquid in the rusty area, used a cotton swab and as well as some cotton balls to rub the solution around. It too 30-45 minutes to get a satisfactory result but it seemed to do ok. I would leave the solution alone for a few minutes, then scrub pretty hard with the swab, add new solution as needed and slowly the rust would dissappear. A good approach if you have an object that can't be submersed. Heavy rust would probably take forever and naval jelly might be a better approach. I've even used a small metal bristle brush and naval jelly on bad spots.

Lastly, an interesting item I have not seen before. Perhaps its common in Arvin sets. That is the use of wooden pulleys for the dial stringing.

Except for the missing knob, this one is buttoned up and working:

Bob,  I liked how you handled the Electrolytic can.  Joe

Courage will follow when Faith takes the lead.

Thanks Joe, it just seemed that would be easier and neater than just hanging a couple electrolytics somewhere under there.

How's the reception? Paul

Its reasonable although I'm getting a lot of static all across the bands that diminishes on a stronger station. Not sure yet if that's just ambient electrical noise or inherent in the radio.
