Yes, Arran. I completely agree with you - radios of these types are designed to receive mainly local radio stations or very powerful radio stations from other places. But I think that of all the types of superheterodynes you listed, the English version of the cheaper 4-tube supers is the most sensitive and generally perfect. I have two receivers with this circuit, the Dutch Philips (which I haven't made a video about yet) and the Lamtvian VEF MD38.
They have excellent sensitivity and, strangely enough, sufficient volume. Here is a link to the video with VEF MD38.

Siemens has a slightly lower sensitivity, but I simply can't imagine what sensitivity a superheterodyne without an intermediate frequency amplifier like Arvin can have ...  I have never dealt with this type of radio. I think that this is definitely only for local reception
