Peter;
I believe that the "A" suffix means that it has as 25 cycle power transformer, not all Canadian sets had those but many did. It should not be a problem operating it from a 50 cps power line though, I would guess that you are using a step down transformer, or autotransformer to drop the 230-240VAC down to 120 VAC since you have a number of North American radios in your collection already? I have to do the opposite with a British Kolster Brandes set, it's 200-250 VAC input, so I'm going to use a ballast from a metal halide lamp to step up the 120 to 240 VAC, I just wish I could find a BS 1362 outlet so I can use the original power plug with it.
That speaker looks like it should be rebuildable, the cone is held on with a metal band that is screwed onto the basket, so it should not be too difficult to remove. A bit of acetone around the rim will take care of any cement or paint holding it in. Then it's a matter of getting the pole piece out of the rear bracket. Hopefully it's just a broken wire and isn't burned out, or corroded.
Regards
