That DuMont cap is an obvious previous replacement cap. It could be there in place of cap number 38 or 42, depending on where it's connected to the vol pot.
Also, are you sure it's the volume pot and not the Tone pot? The Tone pot (with pwr swx) has a .003 mF. connected to the top end. Maybe the previous repair-person subbed cap number 50 with a wrong value?
If this DuMont cap is NOT in place of any other cap, then it's not needed and maybe it was an attempt to "fix" some condition in the past.
