Zenith 5G500
#1

This was bought in Kutztown for $40 right when the shiw was winding down. About 3 or 4 years ago.

Clean, the only real problem sems to be the handle.

And as in all those companions, the asbestos sheet under the chassis.

Two tistlocks, 1" type, unobtanium.
Will have to restuff. The tubulars on the right are that type with thin paper wrapped around the cap and then sealed. Pulling the cap leaves thin paper shell with some wax inside. Hard to gut.
Five of them altogether, so far have restuffed just one.

The cord has to go.
Most wires can stay, but some if seriously disturbed, they crack. Not many, so far one had to go and two or three more will due to close proximity to a solder post I had to clean.

The power switch is intermittent and might require to be opened up. This could lead to more wires disturbed.

Been thinking about the leather handle. Has to be yellow.

Oh....the speaker is not a part of the chassis and is mounted to the front, and is connectorized. Weird for a cheap 5-tube radio.

Not sure your handle used to be yellow or if it has just faded since the end pieces still look to be dark brown.  Replacing these handles pose some problems themselves.  The first is it's difficult to find a handle as thick as the original.  The second issue is how to actually mount it.  You either have to drill out the 4 rivets and replace them with blind brass screws (also hard to find), or drill out the center and also try to replace with something like a blind screw.

My bomber (7G605) is missing the handle, and while some decent reproductions were available at one time they weren't exact and have since disappeared.  I finally bought a sailboat donor at Kutztown that has the exact same handle but until I find a suitable way to mount it, it remains in a holding pattern.

Funny, I have a couple of these that have been sitting around too. I think I'll take a look at them as soon as I finish with the TOs:

What you seeing in the picture is the middle layer of the handle that has disintegrated over time. However I think I do have the top layer (it is not in the picture) and I think it is yellow.
The way to mount it....I think the posts have to be drilled out (as they are rivets) and then some sort of screw-nut-spacer contraption has to be put it instead.

Russ

Would be interesting what you come up with. Hopefully something not too burdensome. Icon_smile

I think that mine has the handle intact. I'll get a picture in a day or two.

Check this place out for handles. https://www.brettunsvillage.com/trunks/h...s/handles/

Thanks, David,

Good place.

I am watching several handles on eBay. When home, I will need to measure the distance between the posts, see which one fits.

Thanks, Russ.

I found the top layer of my handle amongst all the layers (the handle was fully separated/delaminated) and it is also brown.

Mike

PS. I found several similar handles used in tube amps, some of which could fit and look similar.
Like this one.

The slots are 6-7/8" a[art; in my radio I think they are 6-1/2" or 6.1" apart.

This also looks similar, only cheaper.

Those look good. If you get one let us know. If you choose one of the 4-for-$, I am sure that you could sell the other 3. For that price I could stand to get one - let's see where is the emoji for cheap - -

I measured the remnant of the handle on the radio - seems to be a match, 8-3/4", so is the 7G605 one I have, and the eBay one is 8.8".
Good question how to install it, but I will figure it out when the time comes.

So. I only need one, possibly two as one of the 7G605's handle is cracked. I won't save a ton by ordering 4 so if someone wants it, I could order but then it will cost you etra shipping while if buying directly, the shipping is free.

Let me know ASAP, as I'd like to order.

I could use one to replace the handle I'm robbing for my bomber and could just get it from you at Kutztown.  If you don't want to mess with it don't worry about it, it isn't that much more if I just order one, just let me know..... Thanks

If you want, I'll order more.
It's no load to me. Might as well to have some surplus, as I might deal with more portables in the future and many use this handle.

Before I do, realize that you will:

1. Save exactly $0.50
2. Wait till May instead of getting it in about 2 weeks.
3. The handles are of unknown quality. It is assumed they are good and will fit but they might not. If I order one, or two - I run experiment and then let you know if it works, else you are running it with me Icon_smile

If this is what you want, I'm ordering 4pcs.
