My new video for relaxation ...

The Forgotten History of the War of Currents and How It Influenced the Development of Radio

A video about the ancient history of the confrontation between the DC system and its creator Thomas Alva Edison against the AC system and its apologists, inventor Nikola Tesla and entrepreneur George Westinghouse. The war of technologies, known as the "War of Currents", which greatly influenced the development of all branches of electrical and radio engineering. And despite the fact that AC systems began to oust their opponents from the market within 10 years, the confrontation lasted more than 100 years and ended only at the beginning of the 21st century, all this time influencing the development of radio technology ...

New weekly video, if you are interested - watch and comment.

One of the first superheterodynes in Europe with the Short Wave range is the German 5-tube all-wave Lorenz model Super Celohеt 33W of 1933.

Peter;
Too bad that your Siemens radio decided not to co-operate for the video, I hope that it's something simple like a dry solder joint and not a corroded winding in a coil. Did you get this set, and the Lorenz from Germany, or another Western country, or did they find their way to Ukraine after the war? I have a feeling that the circuit choices they made were to avoid paying patent royalties, Philco also did this with sets like the model 89, and 70 using an "Autodyne" local oscillator, sometimes they work, and other times they just will not.
The British liked making four tube superheterodynes, called "Short Superhets" where they would skip using a first audio tube, and feed audio directly from the detector into the power output tube, Arvin metal radios kept the first audio stage but skipped the IF amplifier tube, using regeneration on the first detector/frequency convertor for more gain. Basically these are all "city radios", not really meant for long distance reception.
Regards
Arran

Yes, Arran. I completely agree with you - radios of these types are designed to receive mainly local radio stations or very powerful radio stations from other places. But I think that of all the types of superheterodynes you listed, the English version of the cheaper 4-tube supers is the most sensitive and generally perfect. I have two receivers with this circuit, the Dutch Philips (which I haven't made a video about yet) and the Lamtvian VEF MD38.
They have excellent sensitivity and, strangely enough, sufficient volume. Here is a link to the video with VEF MD38.

Siemens has a slightly lower sensitivity, but I simply can't imagine what sensitivity a superheterodyne without an intermediate frequency amplifier like Arvin can have ... Icon_question Icon_think I have never dealt with this type of radio. I think that this is definitely only for local reception

Oops... Arran, sorry. I didn't answer your other question about where I bought Siemens and Lorenz. I bought them on German eBay, the first in 2018, and the second in 2021, before the war itself. They are in original condition without major repairs and alterations to the chassis in our time. I only did preventive repairs to them with the replacement of critical elements, and also restored the case with my own hands. I know that we all appreciate such rarities in which there is no intervention by modern modernizers for modern trends. Icon_smile But unfortunately, I bought the vast majority of German receivers in my collection at local Ukrainian auctions and a lot of them were simply in terrible condition after interference in their design by unqualified repairmen. There is a lot of work with such radios, but most of them have also been restored by me.

Is this the one from the Fall Kutztown 2023?

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Yes, Michael. This winter I repaired this Westinghouse, RCA 121 and Zenit 5S29. All that remains is to veneer the Zenit case because I don't like the pattern of the native veneer. Now I'm waiting for warm weather. Thank you again for your help in purchasing these radios.
