I'm preparing an old Philco 16X radio console from 1934 for restoration, which unfortunately is in pretty bad condition, but the worst thing is that I need to find a lot of spare parts. Two control knobs are missing, the scale escutcheon is missing, the scale itself is in very poor condition, the output pentodes of type 42 also have weak emission... But the biggest problem is the field coil on the speaker is broken. . I have little hope that I will be able to repair it... It seems that this project will be too expensive for me, but I really want to buy this radio that they gave me to restore.

Michael, this is one of the five radio consoles from Canada from my companion that I received for restoration and that I have already written about here somewhere. It is this Philco that I plan to buy back as compensation for the restoration services provided. Thanks for the link.

Are you certain you wouldn't like the Deforest Crosley instead? It's probably the most "Canadian" of the radios this fellow brought you? I'm sure that the parts will come up for the 16X, or is it a 316X given the Robertson screws in the cabinet? I think that the field coil for the speaker could be rewound if you could not find another, though I'm sure there is another out there, Philco used the same speaker in a number of consoles, "H" series I think they were called. The pole piece in that speaker is pressed in, so it could be pressed out, the bobbin removed, and the field coil rewound or repaired.

Thanks, Arran. Very interesting information about the speaker, I will definitely try to disassemble it if it has a collapsible design. As for the De Forest Crosley ... Yes, it is the most beautiful of the five and I would gladly choose it. But I already have a difficult choice between the RCA Victor 262, Philco16x and the De Forest Crosley. I suspect that I will not be able to choose and will be forced to buy all three.
But considering the cost of delivery to Ukraine, it will be a very expensive pleasure. And considering that I am already retired and do not have any business, it will be difficult to do.

The Philco (3)16X was likely a Canadian market Philco, which means that Philco Products of Canada LTD likely had the cabinet built in Canada by one of the same furniture companies that built the DeForest Crosley cabinet. The reason I was commenting of the DeForest Crosley being the most Canadian is that the Philco chassis and speaker would be more or less identical to one produced in the U.S, whilst the DeForest-Crosley sets had chassis designed and used only by Rogers, and had those spray shield tubes also made by Rogers. To be fair Rogers did source some parts from the U.S, as most Canadian companies did, but they did things in their own unique way.
Some of their larger models had variable IF bandwidth, with a mechanical linkage moving an inductor inside and out of the transformer cores. I don't think that Philco did this, though they did have squelch on some of the earlier 16 models, calling it "QAVC". Amateur radio enthusiasts were some of the early customers for the Philco 16s in part because of the five, later four bands these sets had, and the fairly reasonable price for what they are getting.
I have a chassis from a 3116X but it does not have the original speaker at all, someone put a pair of 8'' Magnavox speakers in it's place, the original would have been similar to the set you have. I never could get the thing working and put it aside, sometimes you just have to.

Hi Peter,

As for the spkr what you are looking for is a U-2 spkr. The H style spkrs are not as robust as the U models. I'm pretty sure I have a U-9 which came out of a 116X. The FC is abt 350 ohms higher than the U-2 and the transformer matches p/p 6A3.

The cone got wet at some point before I got the set. I ended up using it for a test spkr for a while and now it's just sitting somewhere...

I can get it over to Mike as he is abt an hour drive from me.

Over a number of years I've picked up a few of the 16/116B series. These are the tabletop version of your set. Obtw they use the H-13 spkr.

Arran. As always, the information you have provided is very valuable to me. Thank you. Yes, it is a Canadian Philco 316A, chassis number 122. I have just taken a photo of the nameplate and will post it in this thread.
