Philco 500 Series Console Stereo
#1

Icon_e_confused
i have a 1982 philco series 500 AM/FM/Cassette turntable console.
the cabinet needs a little work but is in decent shape.
the radio and turntable work great but not the cassette.
the door has a piece broken off where the latch catches it
the latch itself is seized and does not move when eject is pressed
my mom got this console brand new and has recently given it to me
i can no find any parts anywhere for it new or used.
i would like to replace the tape mechanism with the door included
this console is definitely worth the investment to fix it.

if anyone can help e it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and Welcome to the Phourm!!
Sorry to say that most the set that we are dealing with on the Phourm here are much older say from 1928-1960 or so. Sorry. I understand that the set has some value to you but most here wouldn't give it much thought. I think your best bet on trying to find a door for it would be Ebay to find similar unit. Another thought is finding a door with the same type of hinge and release mechanism. You may be able to cut out the broken areas and glue in pieces from that door onto your broken unit.
Hope this helps

Hi, and welcome!
Have you tried removing the cover and looking for the piece? It may be in there. You can then glue it back on, and reinforce the joint with epoxy.

The release mechanism is pretty simple, you may be able to figure out how it it supposed to work first, then devise an arm or something to release the door.
Kind of hard to say as we see no photos, and we are not familliar with that newer model.

As a last resort, you can just remove the casette door, then use the unit for what it was made for. There is probably a thin shaft, that acts as a hinge, and a spring to open the door.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for the reply
(R-30-S) is the chassis number I have tried everwhere I can think of to find info on this, but no luck. It has great sound and very sensitive. I sent a email to the guy that has the one for sale at (grandcanyontube radios to see if he has any info) but he never answered. I left a message at the other place you listed in your reply to see if he has anything. I have never worked with a radio that has less history than this one. But thanks for the reply. Maybe I can help you sometime.
