model 20 console?
#1

I just picked up a model 20 console for $40. The cabinet is kind of rough and has been painted but it is complete right down to the grille cloth which unfortunately has a tear in it. My question is how rare is the Model 20 console vs the cathedral? I was also wondering if the chassis and speaker out of it are a direct fit into the cathedral cabinet? If they aren't that rare I would like to find a cathedral cabinet to put the chassis in, unless they are super rare and it is deserving of a top shelf resto.

There was 340,000 cathedrals and 70,000 of plain grill lowboy plus 16,500 of latticeworked lowboy, so you draw the conclusions. Yes the chassis and the speaker are the same.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Does the plain grille work mean it's the one that looks like it's frowning at you?
#4

Yes. I have the other one, it is rarer.
In our neck of the woods they do not pop up much at all, either one.

I picked a Philco 20 Lowboy a couple of weeks ago with a decent cabinet and a very good chassis. Paid $60 for it.

I would leave the console alone since it sounds like it;s the rarer version and just find a complete cathedral model 20 elsewhere as they turn up fairly regularly. There you have two choices, the plain brown wrapper early version, or the more elaborate late version with the figured maple arch on the front. You could also buy one with a damaged cabinet and buy a reproduction cabinet, or parts, from Steve, and decide which version you like.

Thought so. That's why I asked.
So Radioman can count only on finding existing cabinet. I have not seen many. That is, I saw none, so far.

Sorry I haven't posted for a while, my graphics card went out of my computer. So I picked up this model 20 console. It is complete and the chassis is in fair shape with only a couple small spots of rust. The speaker is in great shape. I have a question though. Did they come from the factory with a back on them? The one I bought has a back on it and it appears that it possible could be original, or someone in the past built a excellent cover. It in no way looks like a cheap handmade piece. Can anyone varify if they did or didn't come with one?

How about a picture? Thanks.

Model 20 consoles did not originally have backs on them.
