Open = bad.

A few ohms = continuity = good.

Just like checking continuity (or resistance) anywhere else in a circuit.

Sorry, you won't be able to swap much from your 50 chassis to the 51. The 51 is superheterodyne; the 50 is TRF. Different circuitry although both are five tube sets and are built on the same chassis pan.
