What will the alcohol do to the finish ?

I'm not sure about regular alcohol, but Denatured Alcohol will dissolve shellac but not harm the lacquer underneath. This is for a radio where someone in years past has slopped on a coat of shellac, and it's not uncommon to run into these.

Thanks .I think I will stay away from the rubbing alcohol then.
