Hi Everyone, I found a way that worked pretty well to restuff the metal cans on my 47-1230 and thought I would share with you because I hadn’t seen exactly this method anywhere out there yet. Please excuse the not so perfect pictures.
First I Cut the bottom of the can off with a Boy Scout knife following the extended portion of the can cutting slowly around the can over and over until it cut through. As shown in the Pic below.
Then I filed off the sharp edges on the can bottom…
After that I made a little “trough” with my dremel tool around the edge of the bottom piece which will be a cap for the can, the can will now slide down into the bottom into that trough when putting back together….
I then drilled 2 holes in the bottom cap close to the connections so I could run the new capacitor leads through and solder them on to the connections already still on the bottom part of can…
Here is another look at the bottom with the 2 holes drilled in it…
Of course, I cleaned out the old paper capacitor on the inside and now the can is ready to put the new capacitor in….
Now I will put heat shrink tubing on the leads of the new capacitor and run them through the 2 holes , solder the 2 leads to the 2 connections and it is ready to put the top of the metal can back on the bottom…
To hold it together you can use epoxy, crazy glue or if you want to be able to take apart again later you can put rubber cement in that little trough made with the dremel tool and you have a restuffed metal can that looks like it wasn’t ever opened. I hope this helped someone out there wondering how they can restuff their metal cans without it looking like it was done. Thanks, Warren
